- Software training: New strategy starting January 2018
Our software packages are powerful - but also complex. The large variety of possible applications and numerous program features are certainly demanding. An introductory training with focus on the user interface and basics of optical modeling significantly shortens the time it takes new users to get going.
Since our users are distributed world wide we have done more and more remote online training during the last years. It turned out that in most cases the number of questions during the sessions has been small, i.e. usually there is not much interaction. With this rather one-directional lectures in mind, we have decided to adapt our working style concerning software training.
Starting in January 2018 we will start to publish a series of recorded lectures, available and free of charge for everybody. New users can follow these sessions at their on speed and whenever there is space in their agenda. In addition to the introduction of training videos we will intensify the FAQ section of our website, hoping that we will give answers to most typical questions that may arise.
If users are interested in deeper discussion we offer to reserve some hours of intense explanations -however, this will not be in real time, and it will not be for free. We will write answers to written questions or prepare short videos, with some time delay between questions and answers. This way everybody can work at a reasonable time of the day, and no information is lost. You can simply repeat a complex procedure and watch it as long as necessary.
We hope that this new concept will prove useful and comfortable for all participants.

After many years of pure software development we have started to build prototypes of new hardware products. We will focus on systems that record reflectance and transmittance spectra of glass or plastic pieces - both on the desktop and in production. Probeheads for various angles of incidence (8°, 30°, 45°, 60°) will be available, prepared for array spectrometers of various price classes.

During the presentation a coating for passive cooling devices has been invented by the genetic algorithm that was presented. In addition, an even better and simpler design was suggested: A silver layer with a thickness in the range 50 ... 200 nm is sandwiched between a covering glass of 10 to 500 micron thickness and a substrate which might be glass, steel or something else. To our knowledge no patent exists for such cooling devices. We would like to stress that Wolfgang Theiss is the first to describe this idea.

"CODE Software Generation 4 – Easy, Enhanced and Elegant Optical Thin Film Analysis and Design"
Coatings for technical applications need optical characterization during research, design and production. Optical modeling is the method of choice to understand and optimize thin film properties. Our CODE software combines excellent modeling capabilities with very flexible graphical user interfaces. Version 4 is dedicated to simplify the necessary steps for good solutions. Unexperienced or occasional users are guided by a few mouse clicks to a satisfying solution of their problem. Power users get advanced tools to organize their work and to built up their own network of thin film solutions. Simple and advanced applications of CODE are shown in a live demonstration of the software.

"Do it Yourself – Automated Thin Film Design using Genetic Algorithms"
The selection of an appropriate thin film stack as solution for a given optical design problem requires experience. First the materials have to be selected and put into the right sequence, then the layer thicknesses have to be optimized. Whereas the final thickness adjustments can easily be done by a computer, material selection is usually ‘man made’. If a thin film expert is not available for some reason, the development of the coating is blocked. One can overcome this problem applying a genetic algorithm to thin film design; In many cases it is sufficient to state the optimization problem and let the algorithm develop the solution in an evolutionary process. The principle of the method is explained, and its strength and limitations are discussed. Typical industrial thin film stacks (architectural glass coatings, AR coatings, optical filters) are used to demonstrate the application of the method.

The latest version of our installer program run_this_first.exe contains a backup feature. To backup your existing SCOUT or CODE installation
copy the new application file to your program directory (like c:\scout or c:\code) and run it. Press the 'Generate backup folder' at the bottom and follow the instructions.
The backup routine will generate an external folder that contains everything needed to re-install the software.

If you compute U- and g-values or UV transmission according to this standard, the values will be slightly different from what you have
got up to now. If you prefer to compute values according to EN410 prior to the 2011 modifications, you can do so: All affected objects
have the option to ignore the changes. Be aware, however, that you must explicitly set this option.
