In order to simplify the modeling of crystaline silicon PV modules we have added an easy way to define macroscopic surface texture. This new feature can be used for both the covering glass and the Si wafer surface.<\/p>\n<p>A PV module consists of a silicon wafer with top and backside contacts:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-110\" src=\"http:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray.jpg\" alt=\"wafer spray\" width=\"605\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray.jpg 605w, https:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray-300x75.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The wafer is embedded in EVA:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray-packed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-112\" src=\"http:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray-packed.jpg\" alt=\"wafer spray packed\" width=\"605\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray-packed.jpg 605w, https:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/wafer-spray-packed-300x75.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The EVA is covered by glass which gives mechanical strength and protection for the next 30 years. In order to maximize the generation of electric power one may introduce an<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>anti-reflection (AR) layer between silicon and EVA<\/li>\n<li>AR layer between glass and air<\/li>\n<li>surface texture of the silicon wafer<\/li>\n<li>surface texture of the cover glass<\/li>\n<li>diffusely reflecting white backside<\/li>\n<li>low-absorptive cover glass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to find out how much the PV output is increased by these improvements one can perform realistic ray-tracing computations with SPRAY. This can save a lot of experimental work and costs. SPRAY performs 3D spectral ray-tracing and records where how much radiation is absorbed. This is a rectangle with a regular surface pattern in the x- and y-direction. You can set the periodicities in both directions and select a pattern type. Depending on the type of texture you can set additional parameters in the object dialog:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wtheiss.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/clip0001.png\"><img
